How to Name a Quilt
There is no single right way to name a quilt — the best names come from the quilt itself and the person it is for. Here are eight friendly ways to find one:
- Name it after the recipient. “Emma’s Garden” or “Grandpa’s Quilt” turns a gift into a keepsake.
- Name it after the colors. Let the palette lead — “Blue Drift,” “Autumn Patch,” “Rosewater.”
- Name it after the quilt block. “Ohio Star Morning” or “Log Cabin Memories” honors the pattern.
- Name it after the occasion. A wedding, a new baby, a graduation — the moment can become the name.
- Name it after the story. Made from a loved one’s shirts? “Threads of Home” says it all.
- Name it after the season. “Harvest Moon” or “Winterberry” suits a holiday or seasonal quilt.
- Use a playful quilting pun. If the mood is light, “Scrap Happens” or “Piece Offering” brings a smile.
- Keep it short and label-friendly. A simple name like “Wrapped in Love” fits beautifully on a quilt label.

How to Make a Quilt Label (From PDF to Finished Label)
Once you’ve downloaded your label PDF, here’s how to turn it into a real, finished label — and how to attach a quilt label to your quilt:
- 1. Print it at full size. Print the PDF at 100% (no scaling) onto inkjet printable fabric sheets, or onto iron-on transfer paper if you’d rather press it onto your own cotton. The PDF is already sized in true inches, so “actual size” is all you need.
- 2. Set the ink. Let it dry, then heat-set or rinse the way your fabric sheet or transfer paper directs, so the label holds up to washing. Always test a scrap first.
- 3. Trim and press. Cut around the label leaving about a ¼-inch margin, fold that edge under, and press it flat for clean, finished sides.
- 4. Attach it to the quilt. Pin or lightly fuse the label to the back of the quilt — a bottom corner is traditional. Stitch all four sides down by hand with a small slip stitch, or by machine. Adding it before you bind tucks the top edge neatly under the binding.
- 5. That’s it. Your quilt now carries its name and story for keeps.
Quilt Naming FAQ
What should I name my quilt?
Start with what the quilt is about — the person it’s for, its colors, its block, or the occasion. The quilt name generator above turns those details into ready-to-use ideas in seconds.
Do quilts need names?
Not at all — but a name makes a quilt feel like a finished story, and it’s lovely on a label or at a quilt show. Many quilters name a quilt the moment they decide who it’s for.
What makes a good quilt name?
A good quilt name is short, easy to say, and true to the quilt. It might nod to the colors, the pattern, the recipient, or the story behind it — and it should feel like something you’d be happy to stitch onto a label.
Should I put the quilt name on the label?
Yes — the name is a natural first line on a quilt label, followed by who made it, for whom, the date, and a short message. It helps the quilt’s story travel with it for years.
Can I make and print a quilt label here?
Yes! Once you’ve picked a name, tap “Use for Label,” add your details, and the free label maker turns it into a printable quilt label — download it as an exact-size PDF (3×5, 4×6, or 5×7) and print it onto printable fabric or an iron-on transfer. You can also make a pretty gift card to go with a gifted quilt. No account needed.
How do I create a quilt label?
Start with the quilt’s name, then add who made it, who it’s for, the date, the place, and a short message. The label maker words it for you (and gently leaves out anything you skip). When it looks right, download the PDF and print it at home.
What should I write on a baby quilt label?
Keep it warm and simple: the quilt’s name, “made with love by …,” the baby’s name, the place and year, and a sweet line like “May this quilt bring cozy naps and sweet dreams.”
Can I use a funny quilt name?
Absolutely — a playful name like “Scrap Happens” or “Piece Offering” is perfect for a gift or just-for-fun quilt. For memorial or comfort quilts, a gentler name usually feels more fitting.
How do I name a memory quilt?
Let the memory lead. Names like “Threads of Home,” “The Memory Garden,” or “Held in Every Stitch” honor a person or a season of life. Keep the wording gentle, and choose what feels true to you.
