Hey Quilters!
You won’t believe the heartwarming stories coming out of the quilting world this week. Let’s dive right in!
Lela Hadrava & Barbara Helenschmidt at Quilting in the Falls
If you need a little motivation to keep stitching, look no further than 91-year-old Lela Hadrava and her daughter, Barbara Helenschmidt. Lela, a nationally acclaimed quilter, has been quilting through Iowa’s harsh winters for years. Despite being legally blind, she continues to create award-winning quilts that are nothing short of breathtaking. And to keep the family tradition alive, Barbara just finished a quilt her great-grandmother started over 60 years ago! Their quilts are on display in Wichita Falls during the Quilting in the Falls event, running until the end of the week. Watch the story here on YouTube.
Debra Wykert’s Quilt Heading to the Smithsonian!
Talk about a quilter’s dream come true! Debra Wykert from Muscatine, Iowa is getting some serious national recognition—one of her quilts is heading to the Smithsonian American Art Museum next year! Debra’s been quilting since ’95 and still meets regularly with her sewing group. Now, her work is about to be part of a Smithsonian exhibit celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary. The quilt is a colorful record of Muscatine’s 2022 weather, created with fabrics representing temperature ranges. After 150 hours of stitching, the result is truly stunning. Given that 2022 was a year of recovery for her family, with her husband overcoming cancer, this exhibit will hold even more meaning for Debra. You can see her beautiful quilt here.
